Academic Biology Course Syllabus

Course Description:

Academic Biology is a 6 credit full year course for students in Grade 9. This is a course combination laboratory and lecture course.  This course was also designed to continue thinking skills that will serve students in becoming better problem solvers.   Discoveries, inventions, and advances in science and technology have produced a world that is rapidly changing.  Students of today and beyond must be well prepared in science, and even more importantly, in the application of science to make decisions that will impact the future.   Through the inquiry manner of science, students will continue to develop their critical thinking and analytical skills.  Students will be involved in discussion, inquiry, demonstrations, laboratory investigations, cooperative learning and computer based learning.  In addition, students will use the process of science to collect data, form hypotheses, analyze data, and propose conclusions.

 Required Materials:

Text Book: Prentice Hall Biology by Miller and Levine (provided)

  • 3 Ring Binder with filler paper, Pencil Pouch, 2 Pencils/Pens, Eraser, Highlighter
  • 5 Tab Dividers (Enter/Exit, Notes, Lab Handouts, Homework, Readings)
  • Assignment Pad (Record homework and assignment due dates)

 

Grading:

            10% Homework (Not accepted late)

            15% Class Participation & Class Preparedness

            10% Research Project(s) – Current Events and Term Projects*

            30% Lab Reports & Lab Participation (No one is forced to Dissect)*

            35% Quizzes & Tests
