In our Socratic Seminar on Friday, two topics stood out:  1) the notion that people have a hard time feeling empathy unless something directly affects them and 2) selfish behavior and motives will never end well for the person who possesses them.  Please consider the following ideas:   People who lead serious social change put themselves and their families at risk of harm. (Think:  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Copernicus, Malala Yousafzai).  Is this selfish?  Why or why not? Jim and Della were self-less for each other, as husband and wife.  Evaluate that type of selflessness.  Determine if it would be enough to create a better world. Determine the benefits of empathy.  Predict how the world would change if empathy was more prevalent. Determine if there are people in the world who are able to feel empathy and work towards curing social ills that do not affect them. Evaluate how empathy works in your life -- either how people have been empathetic to you, how you've been empathetic to others, and/or opportunities that cross your path on a daily basis for you to be empathetic and selfless. Using evidence from the short stories as well as evidence from historical or current global events, comment on one or both of the topics from our seminar.  (You can use the above prompts as "jumping off" points.)   In order to receive full credit you must follow these guidelines:   Post one original comment and at least one response to a peer's comment. Responses should be written in academic/formal voice.  Please pay attention to your grammar and spelling before posting your response. Do NOT use your last name when you post.  Use your first name only. Demonstrate an understanding of the texts -- both what was written and how it is written (and how it affects the impact and themes of the texts). Feel free to ask follow-up questions!!!  It will help the discussion develop. Post no later than Tuesday, 11:59 pm in order to get credit. Email Mrs. Alonso ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

Posted by Gwen Sylvan at 8/25/2010 9:00:00 PM How was your summer? Did you do anything creative? I worked at an Art Camp teaching traditional art to young students ages 7-9 as well as 2 weeks of Flash animation to students ages 10-14. I was very inspired by their work and have come back with some new ideas. I also viewed student films at the Princeton Library annual Student Film & Video Festival. Let me know what you did that was fun, different, and hopefully creative.

Posted by Gwen Sylvan at 5/26/2009 2:00:00 PM There were a number of exciting movies this year, full of animation and specialeffects. In our class, we learned about the creativity, hard work, and process that goes into even the shortest animation. Which was your favorite animated movie this year and do you have a new appreciation for the medium?

Note the style of the writing: See how personal pronouns are not present and how sentences are short and to the point. The writing for your lab report should follow a similar style.   Writing sample for lab reports
