Coming of Age

Course Description: English 1 and English 1 Honors continues to develop skills and instruction in the NJ Common Core Standards: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language.  An integration of these standards will be presented through a focus on the writing process and literary analysis of genre with an emphasis on the theme of “Coming of Age” and how this theme relates to the student’s view of the world.  This course enables students to develop confidence and responsibility in the practice and application of the communication process.            

Some of the novels you will read in 9th grade include:

  • The Odyssey by Homer      

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

  • Night by Elie Wiesel

  • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Core readings will be supplemented by various short fiction and non-fiction readings to enrich our students' understanding.
