Course Description: English II American Literature is a five credit, full year course that is necessary for graduation.  In this course, we will look at the literature of America with an understanding of the cultural and historical context in which it was written and set.   The structure of the course will involve complete readings of novels and plays, lectures, discussions, historical connections and written expression.
 

Some of the novels you will read in 10th grade include:

• The Catcher in the Rye  by J.D. Salinger

• The Crucible by Arthur Miller

• A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry

• The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

• The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

• How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez

• Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko

• The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien

Core text will be supplemented by both fiction and non-fiction works from the Native American experience and the Harlem Renaissance to modern explorations of the American Dream to enrich our students' understanding.
