PHS seniors experience political process at Girls State civics program
Congratulations to Piscataway High School seniors Leyna McBride and Jane Rodrigues for their successful participation in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State civic education program! The event took place June 22-26 at Georgian Court University, where the girls learned about the political process by forming mock governments, running for office, and debating legislation along with high school girls from around the state.
The girls got involved after Leyna learned about the program and asked if it was available to PHS students. PHS Supervisor of College, Career & Personal Guidance Kelly Chilakos gathered interested candidates and connected them to Colleen Pagano of the Piscataway American Legion Auxiliary. Leyna and Jane were selected after submitting resumes and being interviewed by Ms. Pagano.
Throughout the program, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers ensure the program’s nonpartisan governmental, patriotic, and civic objectives are carried out through interactive learning. The week is filled with many learning opportunities, as well as fun, and the formation of long-term friendships.
