PHS SADD students learn importance of safe driving firsthand

Members of the Piscataway High School Students Against Destructive Decisions got a variety of up-close and hands-on demonstrations on being a responsible driver, thanks to the Piscataway Police Department Teen Safe Driver Academy!

SADD students started their journey at George Logan Towing in North Brunswick, where they saw cars that were involved in high-speed crashes and the destruction they can cause. From there, they returned to the Piscataway Municipal Complex, where they toured the police station and engaged in a variety of engaging demonstrations.

Students got to use a driving simulator, and licensed drivers drove golf carts which wearing “drunk goggles” that simulate intoxication. They also used the goggles to simulate a sobriety test during a traffic stop.

Students also got to see a drone demonstration from Rutgers University; meet bomb-sniffing and drug-sniffing dogs; use a radar gun; tour police vehicles, including a SWAT van; and see a car taken apart using the “jaws of life” by the North Stelton Fire Department.

This amazing learning experience drove home the importance of responsible behavior and will help keep our student safe behind the wheel. They also learned about the wide variety of roles of first responders in keeping our community safe. The SADD club is guide by adviser Laura Benjamin.
